The ADB Japan Scholarships Program, initiated in 1988 and funded by Japan and administered by ADB, enables highly qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member countries to pursue advanced studies at ADB-approved institutions throughout Asia and Pacific region in economics, business and administration, law and public policy, natural resources science technology as well as other development disciplines aimed at building future leaders of ADB. Scholarships are currently awarded each year to about 135 scholars.
Asian Development Bank or ADB Japan Scholarships Program offers international graduate student scholarships. Japan has established this scholarship to foster postgraduate study by students from ADB’s developing member countries in fields related to its operations, such as economics, business management, science & technology, natural resource management, and social development. The Scholarship provides financial support to cover tuition fees, living allowance, airfare, and research subsidy. Furthermore, this program sponsors participation in educational, residential, and leadership development programs by the East-West Center (EWC). To apply for this scholarship, you must meet certain requirements:
ADB is looking for individuals with outstanding academic backgrounds and strong interests in economics, business and management, law and public policy, natural resources management, development studies, or related areas. All applicants must be nationals of ADB borrowing member countries and admitted into one of their approved Masters or Doctorate courses at designated institutions.
To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree from one of the ADB-JSP-approved fields of study an outstanding academic record, and excellent English communication skills. The applicant must return home after finishing studies to assist with country development efforts. The application process starts by providing all your documents to your preferred study institution before screening and ranking candidates based on established selection criteria set by that particular institute before sending that list off to ADB for consideration.
At the time of application, applicants must not exceed 35 years old and possess at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with an excellent academic record and at least two years of professional working experience. Furthermore, they must agree to return home after completion of their studies under the ADB-Japan Scholarship Program and contribute towards its development.
The ADB Japan Scholarships Program (JSP) covers up to two years of postgraduate study at an ADB-approved academic institution in Asia or the Pacific region. This scholarship covers full tuition fees, housing and living expenses, monthly stipend, book allowance for travel expenses allowance for medical insurance premiums as well as benefits such as book allowance or travel reimbursement allowance and medical coverage among other benefits; its stipend may also be supplemented with funds from fellowships.

Eligibility Criteria
- The candidate must have been admitted to the University of Tokyo for a master’s degree program.
- The candidate must be a citizen of ADB member state countries (or) the Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible country.
- The candidate must have an excellent academic record with a bachelor’s degree.
- The candidate must have 2 years of experience post their graduation degree program.
- The candidates must be English proficient.
- The age of the candidate must not be more than 35 years old.
- The candidate must be in good health and fit to move to Tokyo.
- The candidate who has not worked in his/her home country cannot apply.
- The candidate must be willing to return to his/her home country after completion of his/her degree.
