NIG Summer Internship Program 2025 in Japan (Funded)

The 2025 NIG Summer Internship is open to international students at the National Institute of Genetics. The duration of the internship program is 1 and a half months. This internship includes accommodation and a round-trip ticket between the intern’s place of residence (school location) and Japan.

Interns conduct independent research under the supervision of an NIG host investigator. This program includes research training, scientific communication, and laboratory visits to speak with individual principal investigators. The interns will present their experiences at the “NIGINTERN Reports Symposium” at the end of the program. NIG awards a certificate to those who complete the program.

Interns may also participate in different activities like graduate program lectures, journal clubs, and seminars by leading researchers from within and outside NIG. Japanese language courses are also available.

Internship Benefits

The NIG Summer Internship offers the following benefits to its interns:

  • Round-trip air ticket between the intern’s residence (school location) and Japan.
  • Round-trip transportation fee between Japan Airport and NIG.
  • Accommodation fees at the institute hostel and travel insurance during the program.

NIG does not pay accommodation and other expenses other than those mentioned above and the interns are responsible for paying these expenses themselves.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following NIG internship criteria:

·         Required languages: English

·         ​​Eligible countries: All countries in the world

  •      Applicants must be interested in the life sciences and be in their penultimate year at the time of application, i.e. 3rd year, 2nd year of a 4-year undergraduate program, 4th year of a 5-year program, 1st year of a 2-year master’s degree, or 5th year of a 6-year program.
  • Students interested in enrolling in our NIG Doctoral program are encouraged to apply.
  • Due to the highly competitive selection process, applications from students other than pre-finalists and doctoral courses will not be considered.

Internship Requirements

The intern must agree to comply with the following requirements.

  • Comply with NIG regulations.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of classified information received by NIG.
  • Give everything to NIGINTERN—complete tasks, assignments, and projects related to the internship program.
  • Participate in the project during the internship period (full-time, five days a week until the end of the designated semester). Work with the supervisor on agreed days and hours.
  • Give an oral presentation on the scheduled day to report research findings.
  • Submit an essay and survey at the end of the internship.
  • Please submit all boarding pass information for NIG operated flights to and from Japan.

If the above conditions are not fully met, the NIG will take the necessary measures, such as reducing the financial support and terminating the internship.

How to Apply for NIG Summer Internship?

Step 1. Identify the preferred host laboratory and field of interest.

Step 2. Fill out the online application form.

Step 3. Attach the following documents:

  • Motivation letter: within 500 English words.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): in English. That contains educational information from high school onwards (Do not forget to indicate your current academic year).
  • Scanned Academic Transcript: Submit your most recent undergraduate or graduate transcript. Scan it and then download it. If the academic record is written in a language other than English, please attach an English or Japanese translation to each document. If you are uploading multiple documents to the online application system, please combine them into a single file.
  • 2 letters of recommendation from your teacher: These must be submitted by your recommenders through the recommendation page of the online application system.
