  1. Program applications must be made via the online form.
  2. You may submit your application form after a recommendation letter is received in the application system.
  3. Candidates will receive a notification regarding your form being received. You may check your settings to ensure receiving emails from the @oist.jp domain
  4. Upon screening of the applicants, the selection process will be done.
  5. After 3 months of the application deadline, applicants will start receiving their results. Please confirm your inbox receives emails from the @oist.jp domain.

Required Documents for the OIST Internship Japan

1) Statement of purpose

On the online application form, the Statement of Interest needs to be provided.

All the interested candidates are requested to write 400 word or around 2500 characters statement consisting of the following considerations:

  • What is the relationship between OIST, your targeted research unit(s), and your present expertise and skill set? If you are interested in more than one research unit, please explain your interest and suitability for each in one sentence.
  • How and what does a candidate wish to accomplish at OIST in the end?
  • How does a research internship at OIST fit into your long-term professional goals?

2) Diploma & the Academic transcript

Scanned copies of your most recent academic transcript as well as any other transcripts from your previous degree (BSc, MSc, etc.)

Diploma (BSc, MSc, etc.) in PDF format (if applicable)

  • You may upload a scan of an unofficial transcript or other record of grades to the application page.
  • For transcripts that are not written in English, an English explanation is necessary.
  • If you have not graduated and do not yet have a diploma, please attach a certificate of enrolment from your institution (which preferably shows your planned graduation date).

3) Recommendation Letter

It is necessary to obtain a letter of recommendation from an academic or research expert who is familiar with your work. Each candidate must have at least one and no more than three letters of recommendation from qualified referees. The application system will contact your recommenders directly via the email address you specify in the web application form to request the letter(s). Please seek your referee’s permission before entering their information into the form. We do not accept email messages from candidates. When OIST gets a reference letter, applicants will be alerted automatically through the application system.
